How can we help with your Button?

Most pairing, syncing and data questions take under five minutes with the steps below. Still stuck? Send a pre-filled request.

Good to know

Syncing can take a while with large datasets. That's normal, not a sign something's wrong. Give it time before assuming you need to reset your Button or reinstall the app. Work through the steps below first.

Everyday use

How the Button works, day to day

Configure, wear, record, sync and recharge: the five steps, and the one that matters most.

  1. 01

    Configure

Buttons ship on the standard 15-second interval. Need another interval? Order custom sampling and LYS sets it up before dispatch.

  2. 02

    Wear

Clip the Button to the collar or upper chest, as close to eye level as possible, with the sensor facing outward and uncovered.

  3. 03

    Record

The Button records light and movement automatically and stores the measurements on the device until the next sync.

  4. 04

    Sync Most important

Open the LYS app with Bluetooth and internet on, and keep it open until the sync completes. Data then becomes available in the LYS Data Portal.

  5. 05

    Recharge

Charge before the battery runs out: within 5 days for V1, 7 days for PRO. V1 keeps recording while charging.

The most important step: sync on time. When storage is full, the Button stops recording until it syncs, so a late sync means a gap in your data. Sync V1 once a day and PRO at least every 10 hours (at the default interval).
HOW OFTEN TO SYNCButton V1: once a day at the default 15-second interval.
Button PRO: at least every 10 hours at the default interval, within its storage window.
IF A SYNC IS MISSED OR STORAGE FILLSMeasurements stay stored on the Button until the next successful sync. Keep it charged and don't reset it. If storage fills up, the Button stops recording new measurements, so data already stored is never overwritten. Sync within the storage window (24 hours for V1, 10 hours for PRO at the default interval) to avoid gaps.

The Buttons: what they measure & how to wear them7 questions
What do the Buttons measure?V1 · PRO
Button PRO: 10 light channels (eight visible spectral bands, clear and near-infrared) plus a dedicated flicker-detection channel: multi-channel spectral data, illuminance, melanopic EDI (mEDI), CCT, flicker information and movement (3-axis accelerometer, counts per interval). It is a wearable multi-channel sensor, not a laboratory spectroradiometer.

Button V1: RGB, colour temperature (Kelvin), illuminance (lux), 3-axis movement and mEDI.

For research, confirm firmware, metric version, calibration version, units and export fields before collection begins.
How should a Button be worn?V1 · PRO
On the upper chest, collar or a lanyard, as close to eye level as practical, sensing surface facing outward and unobstructed by clothing, hair, bags or stickers. Use the same placement across participants and keep the sensing surface clean. Watch the 15-second video →
How long does the battery last, and how do I charge?V1 · PRO
Button PRO: up to 7 days under the standard configuration; charge at least every 5 days (or per the study schedule). A full charge takes under 2 hours on the USB-C charging station.

Button V1: up to 5 days; varies with device age, sampling, syncing, temperature and use. V1 keeps recording while charging, so you can charge overnight on a bedside table if night light matters to the protocol. Don't start a participant session on a low battery.
How much data does a Button store before it must sync?V1 · PRO
Button PRO: about 10 hours at the standard 15-second rate. Sync within that window for continuous data.
Button V1: at least 24 hours. It can be worn without the phone nearby; sync at least once a day.

Storage and sampling rate can be configured per study (see “Custom sampling rate”). If storage fills before a sync, the Button stops recording new measurements rather than overwriting data already stored, so sync in time to avoid gaps.
Are the Buttons waterproof?V1 · PRO
Button PRO is rated IP54: limited dust and splash protection; never submerge it. Button V1 is water- and dust-resistant for everyday use; don't treat it as waterproof unless study documentation expressly permits.
What environmental conditions does Button PRO support?PRO
Operating 0°C to 40°C; storage −10°C to 50°C at 5–90% relative humidity. Contact LYS before using it outside ordinary indoor/outdoor research conditions.
Firmware updates and the flicker channelPRO
Avoid changing firmware during an active study unless reviewed and documented. Its flicker channel's available outputs depend on firmware, sampling configuration and exported fields; if flicker is a primary outcome, confirm the setup with LYS before deployment. Exports report flicker as a descriptive status (Invalid / No Flicker Detected / 100 Hz / 120 Hz). See “Flicker status values” under Missing data, exports & timestamps.
Apps, phones & the Data Portal5 questions
Which app should we use: LYS Collect or LYS Track?DATA PORTAL
LYS Collect: flexible data collection, built for research. It works when participants use their own phones, and when one shared phone serves several participants, such as in care homes. Several Buttons can share one phone; each just needs to be within Bluetooth range to sync. Participants get no insights, feedback or nudges from the app, so the study doesn't change what it measures. Works with Button V1 and PRO, on iOS and Android. LYS Track: discover the light in your everyday life. Like a fitness tracker for light, it turns your light exposure into insights and feedback. For iPhone, with Button V1.
Which phones are supported?DATA PORTAL
LYS Collect runs on iOS 15 or later and Android 9 or newer, with Bluetooth Low Energy. On Android 9, 10 and 11, Android only lets the app find your LYS Button when Location is allowed. If the app does not find your Button, open Settings > Apps > LYS Collect > Permissions, set Location to Allow, and make sure Location is switched on in your phone's quick settings. Then try pairing again. On Android 12 and newer, the app asks for the permissions it needs the first time you pair.
Which email address should a participant use?DATA PORTAL
Exactly the address used in the project invitation. If they differ, the participant's data may not appear in the correct project.
How should we organise studies, cohorts or participant groups?DATA PORTAL
Create a separate project in the LYS Data Portal for each study or cohort and invite the relevant participants to it. This keeps data grouped correctly and makes exports easier.
Can LYS configure a custom sampling rate?V1 · PRO
Yes, custom sampling rates and on-device storage per study. Contact LYS before devices are prepared and dispatched with the interval, study duration, number of devices and expected sync frequency. A different rate affects storage duration, battery life, data volume and sync requirements; LYS confirms the configuration in writing.
Pairing & syncing6 questions
My Button will not pair. What should I do?V1 · PRO
1. Charge it and place it on the dock. 2. Enable Bluetooth. 3. Keep the LYS app open during pairing. 4. Check it isn't paired with another nearby phone. A Button pairs with one phone at a time; remove it from the previous phone first. Still failing? Send support the participant email, phone model, OS version, app version and a screenshot of any error.
How often should participants sync, and what does “Last sync” mean?DATA PORTAL
Button PRO within its ~10-hour window at 15-second sampling; Button V1 at least once a day. Bluetooth and internet on, app open until the sync completes. “Last sync” is when the Button most recently transferred data through the app. If it doesn't update, check Bluetooth and internet, and that the app stayed open long enough. For custom configurations follow the schedule LYS confirmed.
The Button connects but later stops syncing. Is the data lost?V1 · PRO
Not necessarily. The Button stores measurements locally before transfer. Keep it charged, don't reset it, and try one controlled sync (Bluetooth + internet on, app open). If it continues, contact support with the participant email, phone model, OS version, app version, last successful sync time and the affected date range.
Android pairing or syncing is unreliable. What should I try?DATA PORTAL
Confirm Bluetooth and internet are on, keep the app open until syncing finishes, and make sure the pairing prompt is visible. Large datasets can take a while to sync, so give it time before resetting the Button or reinstalling the app.
Can I connect the same Button to several phones or apps?V1 · PRO
No: one phone and one LYS app per Button during a study; otherwise syncing may be interrupted or measurements overwritten or misattributed. To move a Button: complete a final sync, remove it in the current app, “Forget This Device” / “Unpair” in the phone's Bluetooth settings, then pair on the new phone. If a sync was still catching up, finish it first before switching phones, otherwise you'll just need to wait through it again on the new one.
The V1 battery reading jumps between 100% and 0%. What does it mean?V1
It may relate to the battery, power measurement, connection, firmware or app display. The cause can't be confirmed from the percentage alone. Keep the Button charged, don't reset it, and contact support promptly with the device details. LYS assesses affected units under the applicable support and warranty terms.
Missing data, exports & timestamps6 questions
Why is participant data missing from the portal or export?DATA PORTAL
Most often: the participant used a different email from the invitation; the Button hasn't completed a recent sync; or the export was created before processing finished. Verify the email, sync again, check “Last sync”, then re-create the export. Still missing? Contact support with project name, participant email, phone model, OS version and last successful sync time, and don't reset the Button.
How do I export data, and why isn't it available immediately?DATA PORTAL
Data Portal → Data Export → select participants and date range → start. The file appears in the export list when processed; time scales with participants and date range, so wait and check again. If it stays unavailable, contact support with project name, date range and request time.
What do the Flicker status values in a Button PRO export mean?PRO
Button PRO's flicker detection has been reviewed and confirmed to be working correctly. What changed is how the result is presented: exports previously showed numerical codes, which were easy to misread, and now use descriptive Flicker status values instead:
  • Invalid: no valid measurement available
  • No Flicker Detected: no 100 Hz or 120 Hz flicker detected
  • 100 Hz: 100 Hz flicker detected
  • 120 Hz: 120 Hz flicker detected
If you have older exports with numerical codes, re-export the same date range to get the descriptive values, or ask support for the mapping used by your firmware version.
What do the fields and units in an export mean?DATA PORTAL
They depend on the export, metric and calibration version. Ask for the data dictionary and technical documentation matching your devices and study configuration before analysis. V1 exports can include raw RGB, illuminance and derived light values plus accelerometer movement.
Why can data from several V1 Buttons start at different times or have different durations?V1
Possible causes: staggered starts, how the app polls or downloads, missing or delayed samples, device restarts or clock drift. Don't infer the cause from the graph alone. For investigation, preserve the raw data and provide the number of Buttons affected, sampling interval, app and firmware versions, phone details, sync history and expected start/stop times.
How precise is time synchronisation across Buttons?V1 · PRO
Button V1 keeps elapsed time with a low-power oscillator rather than a traditional real-time clock, so don't assume precise cross-device alignment without a study-specific validation. Tell LYS the required tolerance, duration, sampling interval, number of devices and reference equipment. A software real-time clock (Soft-RTC) is in development to give measurements stable timestamps based on when they were recorded; availability for V1 and PRO will be confirmed after validation.
Calibration, validation & documentation3 questions
Is each Button calibrated? Can I get a certificate or error range?V1 · PRO
Calibration and metric implementation are version-specific, so documentation is issued per device batch and configuration. Send the exact requirement from your institution, ethics board, sponsor or protocol with your order number, study name, metrics of interest and deadline. Support confirms what is available rather than promising a specific certificate or error range before the technical team has verified it.
Are the Buttons validated or used in published studies?V1 · PRO
Button V1 (the original LYS Button) has been used in published research. See the research list. Button PRO is newer; V1 evidence should not be presented as evidence for Button PRO. Ask for the current validation material for the model you are using.
Can we change firmware, metrics, calibration or sampling during a study?V1 · PRO
Avoid it unless the change has been assessed and documented. Record firmware, metric implementation, calibration version, sampling interval and any study-specific configuration. If a change is necessary, contact LYS first and document the date, affected devices, reason and analysis implications.
Orders, delivery & warranty3 questions
How long does delivery take, and who pays customs?V1 · PRO
Generally up to seven working days; custom preparation, calibration requirements, destination and customs can add time, so confirm the date before committing to a study start. International business orders usually ship DAP: LYS pays transport to the agreed destination; the importer pays import clearance, duties, taxes and carrier customs fees unless the written quotation says otherwise. If a charge looks wrong, LYS can help verify declared value, description, origin and classification.
A Button arrived damaged or won't power on or charge.V1 · PRO
Inspect equipment on arrival. For institutional and research orders, report in writing within five business days of receipt with order number, a short description and photos or video. Current terms provide a 12-month limited hardware warranty for manufacturing defects, internal electronic faults and qualifying battery failures.
How do I order a replacement charger?V1
Add a Button V1 to checkout and enter the discount code CHARGERONLY to order only the charger. If the code doesn't work or you're unsure which charger you need, contact LYS before completing the order.
